Geertz’ article reminded me of some cultural experiences my husband and I had when we lived in Morocco from 1952 to 1954. We had a household helper named Isa. Our next door neighbor had a helper, a very attractive young woman, who had a young child. One day I heard Isa and her husband having a loud discussion in the back yard. They were Berbers and I could not understand their language. Later, I asked her in French what it was all about. She said that she was unable to have children and she wanted her husband to take our neighbor’s helper as a second wife. The new one could have children and do the cooking while she worked and earned money. I asked her what her husband had said to that. She replied, “He said that I was enough for him.” Marcia McBeath
